The alveoli in this movie were injured by Tween 20 instillation. Tween 20 deactivates pulmonary surfactant and has been used as model of ARDS for several decades. Notice that alveoli are now very unstable, with some alveoli collapsing totally during expiration and than re-expanding during inhalation.
