The first 5 volunteers cough into short sleeves, and the second 5 volunteers cough into long sleeves. It can be seen that in many cases, the cough plume tends to bifurcate into separate streams passing above and below the intervening arm, in some cases with little noticeable loss of momentum. This effectiveness of this intervention is necessarily subject to the degree with which the individual has time to carefully cover the nose and mouth completely with the sleeve, which may not be always possible in various everyday situations.
